An ultra-thin and ultra-lightweight porcelain tile from Eco Friendly Tiles has been selected by design guru Kevin McCloud as one of his 10 Green Heroes.

The Shannon range from Eco Friendly Tiles (www.ecofriendlytiles.co.uk) has been chosen for the Green Heroes showcase at Grand Designs Live (Excel, London, May 5-13) for its innovative composition and its efficient use of renewable energy sources in its manufacture.

Kevin McCloud has selected the tile as an exemplar product that embraces sustainability, functionality and beauty. Its ultra-thin 3.5mm depth not only results in a lighter weight, it also uses 75% less raw material than a standard porcelain tile. This results in a much shorter production time and much lower energy consumption in manufacture – and the electricity that is used is generated from banks of roof-top solar panels.

The Shannon range is ideal for floors and walls, and its larger size options – up to 3m x 1m – make a real interior design statement, laid new or installed over existing tiles. Outside, the product’s impact resistance, anti-graffiti properties and weight advantages mean that entire buildings can be clad without any special structural engineering.

Says Brandon Neuhaus, Co-Founder of Eco Friendly Tiles: “As the UK’s first CarbonNeutral tile company, we see the “super thin” Shannon range, with its low raw material content and low carbon footprint, as a perfect fit for our vision of a sustainable future that doesn’t compromise on quality or style.”

As the face of the Grand Designs brand, Kevin McCloud has documented hundreds of buildings over the past two decades. This has given Kevin an enormously wide knowledge of materials, the latest technologies and new sustainable practices, making him a touchstone for innovative ideas and innovative products.

For the past four shows, Kevin has selected 10 innovative eco-products to showcase at Grand Designs Live to bring greater awareness to these unsung heroes – and the Eco Friendly Tiles’ Shannon range is among those selected this year.
